06. Encouraging and assisting teachers of foreign language in improving and fostering their own education capability

ABSTRACT

Enhancing language teachers’ competence is a strategy that plays a decisive role in the development of capacity in an education institution. However, encouraging and supporting their academic staff to play an active part in professional development is not an easy job for the management when the concept of “teaching competence” has not been clarified to both the teacher and the management, when the teacher’s life is currently affected by different socio-economic factors, and especially when “teaching competence” is a particular product of individuals whose professional awareness and enthusiasm always necessitate the enhancement of their teaching competence. This article is aimed to clarify the concept of the “teaching competence” of a language teacher and to suggest some measurements that the management can utilize for implementing the strategy of developing their academic staff’s profession.
