12. Development of the native language for ethnic minority children through the family communication environment (Case study of the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City)

ABSTRACT: In Chinese ethnic diaspora in Ho Chi Minh city, younger people show lower proficiency in mother tongue. Their language learning integrational and instrumental motivations lead to a approximate substractive lingualism: Vietnamese, English and in a certain extent Standard Chinese have been studied and spoken instead of the mother tongue. On that alarming situation, the paper suggest some of the methods to create native language environments in the family, with consideration of their communicative particularities. The suggested methods include One person one language, Minority Language at Home, Mixed language policy, Times and Places, High frequency Code-Mixing….
